The formation of TEAM INSPIRATION is the result of a wonderful journey I have been honored to be a part of with my friend Kristen who is a cancer survivor. Kristen and I met over 12 years ago while training for a triathlon. We knew we had come together for a very important purpose, but had no idea of the magnitude. One month later, Kristen, who was 29, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I became her caregiver as she began treatment for the next 2 1/2 years. This included three bone marrow transplants. My experience as Kristen’s caregiver led me to return to school to become an oncology nurse.

Throughout her treatment, Kristen and I continued to do triathlons and marathons together, which gave us the hope, strength, and joy needed to carry us through this challenging journey. We also discovered the importance of incorporating other forms of healing and strengthening for the body, mind and spirit such as meditation, yoga, visualization and energy work. Kristen and I learned through our experience that excellent medical care is essential, but there is much more to the healing process.

Today Team Inspiration offers programs to help our cancer warriors heal body, mind and spirit.

Our mission is to empower individuals living with cancer by developing exercise and wellness programs that improve their physical, mental, and spiritual quality of lives.
Roseann Dougherty Founder, Team Inspiration

Our Triathlon Training program provides triathlon training as a source of healing and empowerment for body, mind and spirit. Some of our cancer warriors support others through their fundraising effort. Some are on the front line as survivors inspiring other cancer warriors as they go through their treatment.

Our Warrior Kids program provides healing resources for children who have parents or family members with cancer and children who themselves are battling cancer.  This includes triathlon and other physical activity appropriate for children while providing a supportive environment.

Team Inspiration is in the process of implementing the Cancer Warrior Exercise program at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center. This is a pilot program to provide cancer patients with an exercise program designed to decrease fatigue, increase activity tolerance and improve quality of life.

Research has shown the effectiveness of exercise for cancer survivors in abating the side effects of treatment, improving quality of life, and providing more positive outcome for survivorship. In addition, there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that exercise decreases the risk of many types of cancer. One Harvard study found that the risk of colon cancer, the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S., was dramatically reduced by exercise. Our Triathlon Training, Warrior Kids, and Cancer Warrior Exercise programs benefit all of our cancer warriors as we inspire and empower one another through this journey. As our programs grow, our goal is to provide support throughout the cancer community to heal and strengthen body, mind and spirit.
