What is the BE INSPIRED Progragm?

The BE INSPIRED Program is comprised of various events that unite the cancer warrior community and the athlete community to empower and support one another in our commitment to exercise and wellness goals.

Kristen Adelman, Inspired Cancer Warrior:

When Team Inspiration’s very first cancer warrior, Kristen Adelman, was diagnosed with cancer in 2000 and was told she had very little chance to survive, she decided she would do her part in making sure she had the best chance at beating this disease. She was an athlete most of her life and was training for triathlons when she was diagnosed. Kristen and her doctors at NIH knew it was important for her to stay strong body, mind and spirit for the difficult road ahead. She decided to set a personal goal of 5000 miles of hiking, running, swimming, and biking that would help her get through this challenge. After numerous rounds of chemotherapy, radiation and three bone marrow transplants, and many miles of riding, running, hiking swimming, etc., Kristen is thriving and continues to pursue exercise, yoga and energy work as a means to continue living a life of wellness and joy. During her treatment Kristen ran several marathons and completed the Eagleman 70.3 Ironman  and now Team Inspiration is a charity partner for this event! Kristen’s current goal is to run a marathon in every state – she has 46 down and 4 to go!

Team Inspiration's original cancer warrior, Kristen Adelman, used exercise throughout her 2 1/2 year treatment for lymphoma to stay strong body, mind an spirit. Kristen underwent radiation, chemotherapy and three bone marrow transplants. She is cancer free and is working toward her goal to run a marathon in every state.

BethAnn Telford, Inspired Cancer Warrior:

In August 2012, Team Inspiration met a remarkable young woman named BethAnn Telford who has been battling brain cancer for 7 years and has raised over 1/4 of a MILLION DOLLARS for the National Brain Cancer Foundation through her charity called TEAMBT, to help others who are battling brain tumors. She was awarded a slot for the Ironman World Championship in Kona on October 13, 2012 through the Kona Inspired program because of her relentless spirit in her own journey with terminal brain cancer and her immense efforts to help others, especially children battling brain tumors.

BethAnn is a giver and one of the special people she gives her love and support to is 6 year old Anya who is also battling brain cancer. Through the Warrior Kids program, Team Inspiration was able to get Anya and her family to come to Kona with BethAnn so they could share this once in a LIFETIME inspirational journey!

Marilena D’Amone, Inspired Cancer Warrior:

In 2013, Marilena had run 27 marathons and had decided to take on the ultimate challenge…an Ironman triathlon! She was all signed up and tackling the challenge of training. Five weeks to go- feeling good! Suddenly, everything changed. Just weeks away from her first Ironman race, she received a call from her doctor, informing her that she has cancer and would be unable to compete. While she was heartbroken, she had the spirit and support to transition from Ironman athlete to an Inspired Cancer Warrior. Throughout her treatment she continued to race triathlons and running races. She will be racing Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire to celebrate her one year wedding anniversary.

The wedding invitation included a Tour de Puglia and Davide Burrows with Southern Visions Travel provided SAG support for this event for Team Inspiration!  We had a swim event in the Adriatic Sea and a run along the coast the day after the wedding. It was a beautiful event in Marilena’s homeland of  Italy.

Kenneth Schweigofer, Inspired Cancer Warrior:

In 2014, Team Inspiration raced IRONMAN 70.3 Eagleman with our Cancer Warrior Kenneth Schweighofer. Jessica Hensley, Inspired Cancer Warrior:

Jessica was Team Inspiration’s honored triathlete in 2010 while she was in treatment for AML, a form of leukemia, at the University of Maryland Medical Center. In 2011 and 2012 she was a runner on one of our relay teams for Iron Girl Triathlon and in 2013 she did the bike and run. In 2014 Jessica completed her dream of completing the entire Iron Girl Triathlon with her family and Team Inspiration cheering her on!

Andy Lambert, Inspired Cancer Warrior:

Andy will be racing Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire for Leukemia & Lymphoma Research (LLR) and will be representing Team Inspiration for Challenge Roth.
He was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in 2011 and put on a watch and wait program, but in his own words ‘they made a mistake and just want to steal blood every 3 months’. Andy, a triathlete of 15 years, is convince that his training and racing regime is keeping the cancer at bay and his conviction shows that this Inspired Warrior truly walks the talk to inspire others who face this challenge.. He wants to show other people in a similar situation, through his association with LLR, that fighting back can work.

Team Inspiration’s Cancer Warrior Exercise Program was developed to help cancer patients and survivors mitigate fatigue and improve quality of life and survivorship. Cancer related fatigue affects more than 98% of cancer patients and can continue beyond treatment. According to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network , “cancer-related fatigue is defined as “a distressing, persistent, subjective sense of physical, emotional, and/or cognitive tiredness or exhaustion related to cancer or cancer treatment that is not proportional to recent activity and interferes with usual functioning.” Evidence-based research from the Oncology Nursing Society has has shown exercise to be effective in preventing and treating fatigue in cancer patients.

Furthermore, an article in Cure Magazine  states that “The American Cancer Society recommends a minimum of 30 minutes a day, at least five days a week. But if you’ve had cancer, the need may be particularly profound, given research suggesting that physical activity can increase energy, ease the side effects of treatment, and perhaps reduce the risk of recurrence.”
