Ironman dreams, powered by chemo! (part 5)

By , Oct 3, 2013 | 0 comments

Well I just passed the half way point of this chemo journey!   Cycle #4 went ahead as planned yesterday and although I am feeling the usual post chemo roughness, I am happy. If it all goes according to plan, I will actually be done at the end of November, which must be just round the corner yes? Chemo going ahead as planned also means I can now officially pack and go on holiday and what a holiday it will be!   Mark and I are going to Kona on Saturday for just over a week to train, relax and cheer those amazing athletes during the IM championships! But most of all, it will be my...

Ironman dreams, powered by chemo! (part 4)

What a long week, so many ups and downs! Chemo cycle #3 finally went ahead last Wednesday, after 2 postponements and had to be administered with a 20% dose reduction as the doctors don’t think I can sustain things at they stand at the moment from a recovery point of view. I just hope it is as effective as it’s meant to be! The few days right after chemo were very rough, felt the usual wave of nausea and was just exhausted. I only had a few days before the half marathon! In my original plan, I had hoped for chemo to take place sooner so I could recover in time for the race but it wasn’t...

Ironman dreams, powered by chemo! (part 3)

Sept 17th 2013 Well it has been a frustrating few days. I was due to have chemo cycle #3 last Friday but my platelet levels were too low, came back to the hospital on Monday but no improvement and so I am back here today. If no improvements, they will go ahead with chemo but at a lower dose, which of course I am concerned about. They even told me on Monday to stop exercising which I balked at!! There is no evidence that exercise impacts platelet count so why?? Nonetheless, I did rest yesterday so let’s see what today brings. Running is definitely getting tougher but I am trying to stick to...

Ironman dreams, powered by chemo! (part 2)

Sept.10th 2013 It’s good to wake up after the weekend with sore limbs! Mark and I run 11 miles on Sunday through our favourite park and got to deal with the typical English weather: sun and rain and sun again! The chemo is clearly having an impact on my fitness as the effort required to run ‘long-ish’ is much more so than usual. So I was huffing and puffing a lot but somehow we got it done! We have signed up for a half marathon which takes place in the city where we live in 2 weeks time, on Sept. 22nd, just because it’s great to have a goal to keep on training for! Me being me of...

Ironman dreams, powered by chemo!

Sept 8th 2013 Well I guess it’s just so fitting that I start my blog on this date, as exactly 2 months ago today I got the call that said: ‘it’s cancer’. A call that turned my life and my Ironman dreams upside down. I was the fittest I had ever been, 5 weeks away from my Ironman debut and now I had cancer? Surely this could not be possible and surely I could still do it? I was in denial but as the days and weeks went by, alongside 2 operations, various scans and the start of chemo 3 weeks ago, I turned from an Ironman wannabe into a Cancer Warrior! But let me introduce myself and tell...
